A Rejection of Web3 Principles? Or a Simple Rebrand? You Decide.

TL;DR

  • Jordan “Poopie” Castro (co-founder of Doodles) shared a post to the project’s official Discord server saying that Doodles is “not an NFT project.”

  • Some saw it as a rejection of Web3 principles, and a sign that Doodles is pushing back on the scene that helped the project build its reputation in the first place.

  • We haven't spoken directly with Mr Poopie (great name btw) but what he may have been trying to express is that the Doodles project needs a rebrand.

  • With this language change, it means that it will appeal to a larger audience. They've moved from using language which Web3 people love, to language that everyone understands.

Full Story

Alright, ready for some hot gossip?

Jordan “Poopie” Castro (co-founder of Doodles) shared a post to the project’s official Discord server on Wednesday which really ruffled some feathers.

The key feather-ruffling line..."We are no longer an ' NFT  project'"

At first, there was huge backlash.

Things like: "So [Doodles] got $50M then decided not to be an NFT project anymore," said @FarmerNash on  Twitter .

Some even saw it as a rejection of  Web3  principles, and a sign that Doodles is pushing back on the scene that helped the project build its reputation in the first place.

Poopie did a follow up  tweet  explaining that he has dedicated his entire career to  blockchain  and that he would:

"Never abandon the pursuit of delivering the promises of this tech to the world."

He said that NFTs will continue to be the "connective tissue" across future plans.

So, here's our take:

We haven't spoken directly with Mr Poopie (great name btw) but what he may have been trying to express is that the Doodles project needs a rebrand.

And we tend to agree!

Being a "leading media franchise" and "no longer an NFT project" doesn't mean the project suddenly becomes unrelated to Web3.

With this language change, it means that it will appeal to a larger audience.

They've moved from using language which Web3 people love, to language that everyone understands.

We're making the big assumption here that the Doodles team will continue to build projects, games, dApps etc. on the blockchain and not veer too far off the Web3 path; but given Poopie's comments, that might not be too big of an assumption.

Doodles is a huge project, and if this rebrand to a 'leading media franchise' works, we may just see other projects take the same approach.
