Web3 Just Found a Side Door Into Apple’s App Store!

TL;DR

  • Apple takes a 30% cut of all revenue generated on its App Store, and if businesses try to give users other payment options - they get booted. That is, until now.

  • A judge recently ruled that, while Apple can still take its 30% cut - it can't block businesses from circumventing the split by sending users to their stand alone websites.

  • Web3 developers have had a real issue with building/launching iPhone apps, because they take payment in crypto - but Apple's payment integrations don't allow that.

  • But this new ruling now opens the doors for Web3 developers to reach the 1B+ iPhone and iPad owners out there.

Full Story

Imagine you run a shoe store with a location in a MASSIVE mall.

Now imagine if the mall owners stipulated that:

  1. They get to take a 30% cut of every sale.

  2. And you couldn't point your customers to any of your other locations.

That'd never happen! There's too much competition for a single player to get away with that sort of thing in the physical retail space.

In the digital world? Not so much...

Apple takes a 30% cut of all revenue generated on its App Store, and if businesses try to give users other payment options - they get booted.

That is, until now.

A judge recently ruled that, while Apple can still take its 30% cut - it can't block businesses from circumventing the split by sending users to their stand alone websites.

And it's all thanks to Epic Games (the creators of your little cousin's favorite video game, Fortnite).

Epic has been taking Apple to task (and court) over its cut-throat policies.

Ok, cool. How does this relate to Web3?

Well! Web3 developers have had a real issue with building/launching iPhone apps, because they take payment in crypto - but Apple's payment integrations don't allow that.

So Web3 native apps have essentially been banned from the App Store, on an unrelated technicality.

But this new ruling now opens the doors for Web3 developers to reach the 1B+ iPhone and iPad owners out there.

That's a BIG market! We love to see it.
