We're now one step closer to full interoperability in Web3 gaming.
Most gamers hate Web3 - and there's data to prove it.
A study from CodaLabs found that traditional gamers ranked their feelings towards the Web3 gaming industry a 4.4/10.
In the study they say their biggest issues with Web3 gaming are around scams and unnecessary costs.
Ok, not great - but here's the good news.
MetaMask (one of the most popular wallet providers), just partnered with gaming developer, Game7, to create HyperPlay - a Web3 native game launcher.
The idea being that if it's easier for developers to build crypto-friendly games, more of them will be built.
(And with more volume, comes more innovation...hopefully).
The valuable part about this partnership is that users of any HyperPlay game will be able to carry NFTs, tokens and achievements in their MetaMask wallets, which can then be used within different games.
While full interoperability is sort of like the 'Holy Grail' of Web3 gaming, it feels like we're still a ways away.
For one, gamers either have to love it (push that score to 10/10 baaaby!), or not even know that they're playing a game built on blockchain technology.
The business model might need to be revised in order to be sustainable too.
One idea, for example, is to take a leaf out of the existing industry's playbook and charge companies for ad space within games, rather than having users pay for access.
That appeals to the 'unnecessary costs' part that traditional gamers don't like right now and...wait - even the scams as well (?).
(No money down = no money lost, right?).
We're probably not as close as to the situation as we need to be to start patting ourselves on the back, so we're going to stop right there...
Either way, this partnership feels like a step in the right direction!
