A bunch of Web3 users just sent someone to space (not metaphorically, literally)

Statistically, most young boy’s dreams for the majority of the 20th century was one thing:

To become an astronaut.

And while it has now shifted to 'become a YouTuber,' last century's dream just came true for MoonDAO member, Cody Cotton.

Late last week, MoonDAO sent Cody to space, with all funds for his ticket on the Blue Origin rocket, having been raised through (you guessed it) a DAO.

This was Phase 2 of MoonDAO’s mission...Phase 5 is “to have sweet moon parties.”

Now look, you probably don't need an explanation of why all of this is cool - but we love writing & geeking out about this sort of thing, so here it is:

  • A ticket on a Blue Origin flight ain’t cheap - MoonDAO raised $8M in order to get that thing!

This tells us their community (DAO members) are strong believers in their mission, and probably quite wealthy (there’re only ~5000 total members).

A wealthy group of people that are aligned on their mission?
...could be powerful / could be terrifying / could be both?

  • Joining a DAO and contributing to it is a pretty abstract concept.

To quote the leader of MoonDAO: “The idea that you could be selected to go into space because of it, now that’s interesting.”

  • The guy at the helm of MoonDAO, Pablo Moncada-Larrotiz, was also an original member of ConstitutionDAO which raised over $40M to buy an original copy of the U.S. Constitution.

While they were outbid by a single billionaire, he says he’s taking the lessons learnt from that project, into this one. It feels like just a matter of time before one of these DAOs has a huge impact on society.

Anyways, ya'll coming to the moon party?
