Are these Adidas NFTs breaking new ground? Or are they way too early to the party?

We're torn on this...

Adidas just announced the release of its 'wearable NFTs' collection.

Basically, they're NFTs that represent wearables that can be used to dress your avatar, in the metaverse.

(Or, if you have a Bored Ape NFT, they've figured out a way for you to dress your ape in an Adidas digital wearable - making it even more unique).

On one hand:

We love to see legacy brands developing in the Web3 space, working to push things forward, and setting a roadmap for other brands to follow.

...on the other:

It feels like they're selling custom iPhone cases, in the 90's. It's hard to get excited about digital wearables, when the metaverse doesn't quite exist yet.

Here's how we're reasoning each side of our own argument:

Sure, this isn't about to mark a groundbreaking shift in the Web3 space, but it's not designed to.

It's intended to appeal to early adopters that will be able to brandish these digital wearables as bragging rights - showing off that they believed/participated in the promise of the metaverse, before it even really existed.

And seeings as it's Friday, we're going to indulge ourselves by finishing this article the same way we started it: with a Natalie Imbruglia reference.

Let's hope the illusion of this technology, soon changes into something real.
