Google Maps, but you get paid to use it.

Is this a bold new step towards virtual education or an elaborate ad placement?

Here's what's happening:

The makers of the Ledger hardware wallet (see translation), have partnered with blockchain game 'The Sandbox', to promote crypto education in its virtual world.

So it's essentially a crypto university in the metaverse?

It might be.

...but it could also be a thinly veiled ad campaign for Ledger.

(who are one of the go-to companies for those looking to store their crypto securely)

The main focus of their education?

You guessed it: security.

Here's what we hope will happen:
Ledger creates a comprehensive virtual learning experience that gets students excited about the Web3 space by educating them on a broad range of topics, including security.

Here's what we're worried will happen:
Ledger creates the Web3 equivalent of those 'Free Webinars' you see advertised, where the host spends an hour agitating their viewers' fears, before conveniently offering them a paid solution.

We vote option 1.

Google Maps, but you get paid to use it.

Ok, this is very cool.

'Hivemapper' is a decentralized digital mapping platform that crowd sources their map data from users' dash-cams and rewards them with crypto.

...imagine getting paid to let Google use your GPS data to update their maps in real time.

That would never happen.

In Web2, the agreement pushed upon us for most free products is:
We give you access to our app -> you give us your data.

In Web3, things get interesting...middlemen get axed, users get paid.

How do you counter counterfeiters?

What would happen if anyone with a computer could replicate a Louis Vuitton hand bag (stitch for stitch), in two mouse clicks?

We can tell you this much: our families would all be getting matching Christmas presents this year.

A similar problem exists on OpenSea's NFT marketplace, where counterfeiters are able to copy/paste and resell some of the platform's best selling NFTs under their own name.

To add insult to injury, OpenSea's process for removing infringing works is "not effective or efficient" and puts the responsibility of policing counterfeits back on the artists.

Decrypt.co's Vivek Jayaram pitches a nuclear option, that would push congress to make digital marketplaces (like OpenSea, Ebay and Etsy) liable for any counterfeits on their platforms.

That would light a fire up 'em.
