Reddit’s boring announcement is actually kind of exciting.
This news is kind of boring - and because of that, it's exciting.
Confused?
Same.
Here's how we ended up here:
So, Reddit are launching an NFT avatar marketplace.
Meaning, users will be able to buy and display NFT profile pictures, without leaving Reddit.
...and while it's a neat integration, it's also a little boring.
Profile picture NFTs aren't a new concept - and neither are the marketplaces selling them.
But that's what got us excited...
The more we hear about a new technology being adopted → the more used to it we become → the less excited we are by each little announcement.
I.e. the closer a technology gets to being ubiquitous, the more boring the news surrounding it becomes.
For example:
The first iPhone had...
A 2MP camera (rear facing only)
No picture messaging
No third-party apps (or app store)
No streaming
And only ran on AT&T's potato of a network.
But we (collectively) lost our minds over it.
Today, the latest iPhone has...
A three lens 12MP rear camera / 12MP front camera
3D lidar sensors / FaceID
Can double as a wallet / car key / house key
Features a slew of apps that let us access just about any song, movie or TV show ever made.
And can do all of this, under 19-feet of water, without breaking.
Our (collective) reaction as consumers?
"Eh. That's neat, but we're kind of used to it."
So, the news of Reddit's entrance into the NFT space feels a little boring.
(Especially after Twitter, Instagram & TikTok have done so, in some form, before them)
But...boring news hints at ubiquity, and Web3 ubiquity is exciting!
Excellent.
