Starbucks launches its Web3 app (and it seems users actually like what they see).

There're some things in this world we don't understand (but we're still glad for their existence).

For example:

  • Christopher Nolan's plot lines.

  • The Colonel's secret 11 herbs and spices.

  • The cultural obsession surrounding Starbucks.

That last one made the cut, because it's currently being used to launch the 'Starbucks Odyssey' app.

Basically, users download the app and earn points when they make purchases in-store, and take quizzes/play in-app games.

The more points a user accrues, the more “Journey Stamp” NFTs they earn.

And according to Starbucks, the app has received “unprecedented interest," from customers - which is a bigger deal than it seems.

(Name brands launching Web3 products, without them being written off as a money-grab, is fairly uncommon).

Again, we don't quite get the obsession; but we're happy it exists.

Here's why:

In 2021, the Starbucks mobile payment app had ~31M users, 5M of which use the app every week.

That's HUGE! For context, the Apple Wallet had about ~44M users (and the iPhone has a user base of 1B people!).

If the Starbucks Odyssey app can onboard just a small portion of the Starbucks mobile payment app's existing user base (say 1-2M), that'd be a big win for Web3 adoption/normalization.

Nice!
