The “ultimate video game spectator sport" and why Web3 makes sense.

The “ultimate video game spectator sport" is coming.

Have you ever played Age of Empires? How about Words With Friends?

If the answer to either of those is ‘yes,’ then you’ve played a game from the mind of video game creator, Paul Bettner.

He’s been working on his latest game, Wildcard, for over five years - and just released a sneak peak of what we can expect.

In an interview with Decrypt he called it the “ultimate video game spectator sport.”

It’s still a bit unclear as to exactly what the game will be, but it seems kind of like Street Fighter meets Twitch.

And instead of simply watching from the sidelines with a chat box, you’re an avatar watching as if you’re at a football game.

(Super cool concept)!

The part of the interview that really caught our eye, was when Bettner was asked “so why build a Web3 game?”

It’s a good question since most Web3 games are either Ponzi schemes, or simply use ‘Web3’ for marketing and could easily be Web2 games.

Bettners answer:

"I think most of Web3 is a solution looking for a problem. Most Web3 games suck.

But Web3 allows functionality that has never been possible in Web2."

For example, Airdrops. The ability for a player to randomly ‘throw’ an NFT at one of their supporters adds to the excitement of Wildcard.

“We really want an experience where the competitor can literally share rewards with their fans live during the stream, and Web3 is the technology that lets us do that.”

A lot has happened in the Web3 space since Bettner started work on this.

Can’t wait to see what he puts out.
