Uh-oh. Coinbase Is Threatening To Leave The US.

Article source, here.

TL;DR

  • Coinbase CEO, Brian Armstrong met (very publicly) with British regulators and tweeted:

  • “The UK is moving fast on sensible crypto regulation to both drive economic growth AND consumer protection. Excited to keep investing in the UK.”

  • Translation: "I (Coinbase) will run away from home (the US) if the situation (Gary Gensler) doesn't change."

  • This isn't baseless threat. In fact, Coinbase just landed a Bermuda license. Meaning the exchange could move offshore as soon as - get this - next week!

Full Story

Were you one of those kids that would threaten to run away from home when you fought with your parents?

If you weren't, here's some insight into the process:

You see, the trick was to make it seem as real as possible.

Pack a bag in front of your folks, slam the door on your way out...visit the neighbors and have a very loud discussion about how you "need room and board," and are "happy to pay in marbles and action figures."

That sort of thing.

Well, Coinbase CEO, Brian Armstrong is now employing similar tactics in the battle for crypto's future in the US.

He's recently met (very publicly) with British regulators and tweeted:

“The UK is moving fast on sensible crypto regulation to both drive economic growth AND consumer protection. Excited to keep investing in the UK.”

Translation: "I (Coinbase) will run away from home (the US) if the situation (Gary Gensler) doesn't change."

But contrary to the intimidation tactics we employed as kids, this isn't baseless threat. In fact, Coinbase just landed a Bermuda license.

Meaning the exchange could move offshore as soon as - get this - next week!

So what's the larger play here?

Our guess: Brian's trying to agitate law makers that have that 'pro capitalist / free-market-loving' dawg in them, who are yet to take a firm side on the crypto debate.

(Essentially convincing them that it's in America's best interest to support sensible crypto regulation).

@Brian, we have a new tagline for your business card and/or resume:

'Armstrong by name, strong-arm by nature.'

Thoughts? Brian? You there?
